Walking in Bangkok: Benchakitti Park

Wetland walking path and elevated walkway inside Benchakitti Park in Bangkok

Introduction

The Benchakitti Park walking route is a 1.45 km walk through one of central Bangkokโ€™s largest urban parks, following lakefront paths, elevated walkways and wetlands. Beginning beside the lake, the route follows jogging and cycling paths, elevated walkways and wetland sections before returning to the waterfront. Within a relatively short distance, the surroundings shift between open exercise spaces and more enclosed areas beneath tree cover, while sections of the Bangkok skyline remain visible beyond the park.

How to Use This Walking Route

This route is commonly used for walking, jogging and everyday recreation, particularly in the morning. Rather than following a fixed linear path, the interconnected walkways allow you to explore different sections of Benchakitti Park, including the lakefront, elevated walkways and wetlands. The route can easily be shortened or extended depending on your available time and preferred walking distance.

Route Context in Bangkok

This route runs entirely within Benchakitti Park in central Bangkok, between Ratchadaphisek Road and the Chalerm Maha Nakhon Expressway. The park combines elevated walkways, wetlands, lakeside exercise paths, and shaded tree-covered sections within a relatively compact green space surrounded by dense urban development. Although the park sits beside some of Bangkokโ€™s busiest transport infrastructure, the route repeatedly transitions into quieter areas where natural sounds and slower movement become more noticeable.

Starting at the Lakefront

The route begins beside the lakefront within Benchakitti Park, where early-morning joggers move steadily along the waterfront paths. Even at 7:00 AM, activity is already visible across the wider exercise lanes, though the atmosphere remains calm and evenly paced.

Shortly afterwards, the route narrows into smaller shaded pathways, surrounded by dense greenery and the constant birdsong. Cyclists pass occasionally, while walkers move more slowly beneath the trees. Through occasional gaps in the trees, parts of the Bangkok skyline remain visible beyond the greenery, reinforcing the contrast between the park and the surrounding city.

Key Transition Along the Route

Further into the park, the route enters the elevated wetland walkway system, where the environment changes noticeably. The path gradually rises above the wetlands, offering wider views across the park and surrounding areas.

Birdsong is almost continuous throughout much of this section as sunlight moves across the elevated walkway and the surrounding vegetation. In the distance, One Bangkok appears intermittently above the wetlands.

As the elevated section descends, movement gradually increases. Wider lanes reconnect with smaller footpaths, and walkers and joggers become more evenly distributed throughout the park. Beneath the elevated walkway, wetland sections create a quieter environment, with birds audible above the surrounding activity.

These repeated changes in enclosure, sound, density, and movement define the character of the Benchakitti Park walking route.

Arriving Back at the Lake

As the route approaches the final section, it gradually opens again beside the lake. Compared with the enclosed wetland sections, the atmosphere here feels more spacious, with sunlight reflecting across the water and wider skyline views returning.

Across the lake, the surrounding skyline underscores how close Benchakitti Park is to Bangkokโ€™s larger commercial districts, despite the parkโ€™s quieter environment.

What This Route Reveals About Bangkok

This route illustrates how Bangkokโ€™s larger green spaces contain multiple environments within a relatively compact urban setting. Elevated walkways, wetlands, exercise spaces, and quieter tree-covered sections coexist within the park while remaining closely connected to the surrounding city.

Within a short distance, the route shifts between open lakefront areas and enclosed canopy walkways, while maintaining continuous connections throughout the park.

Similar transitions between urban density and green space can be observed in Lumphini Park, although the environments and movement patterns differ.

Local Insight

We regularly revisit this corridor to document seasonal changes, neighbourhood activity and walking conditions for the Follow Me Route Library. Recording the same streets and paths throughout the year helps build a more accurate picture of how Bangkok changes across different days, seasons and times of day. Within Benchakitti Park, the atmosphere gradually shifts from quieter wetland sections to more active exercise spaces as movement builds around the lake and along the elevated walkways.
